JOE SOLO & REBEKAH FINDLAY
We are delighted to welcome Joe Solo back to Glossop Labour Club for a Defiance Sessions exclusive. He’ll be accompanied by Rebekah Findlay to deliver a specially commissioned performance of Joe’s album ‘Never be Defeated’.
A masterpiece of storytelling and social history ‘Never be Defeated’ tells the story of the 1984-85 Miner’s Strike through the eyes of the men and women of Stainforth and Dunscroft, South Yorkshire- The Hatfield Brigade. To research and write the album Joe spent time with the former miner’s and their families gathering stories and speeches and borrowing archive footage and documentaries. The result is a suite of songs that tells a remarkable story of their fight for their communities. Solo has enlisted Rebekah Findlay to provide the voices of the miner’s wives.
“A most moving and vivid account of the Miners Strike. The musical and lyrical approach demonstrates a creative intelligence not always to the fore in political song. A CD full of passion, anger and dark humour.” FATEA MAGAZINE
“The real triumph is the way that Solo has immersed himself in the characters. These songs are essentially personal vignettes that capture moments of anger, injustice but more than anything, as the album title suggests, a lasting feeling of pride.” LOUDER THAN WAR
This is an evening not to be missed. Joe Solo played at Glossop Labour Club in March 2015 and absolutely blew the crowd away. He has since gone from strength to strength cementing his reputation as a genuine working class socialist voice and an incredible songwriter chronicling people’s lives. His appearance at this year’s Tolpuddle Festival was witnessed by Tom Robinson who immediately has been playing Joe on his BBC6 Music show.
Opening the show is our special guest Johnny Campbell. Starting with Punk bands in his younger days Johnny now brings that punk attitude to traditional folk music. Johnny is what they call a road warrior. He’s performed widely across the UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Turkey, USA and has been billed with such acts as Levellers, Billy Bragg, Ash, Becky Unthank, Chumbawamba and many more. He recently returned from Finland where he did a joint tour with a previous Defiance Sessions guest Efa Supertramp. When he’s not on the road Johnny is an avid rambler and access activist, particularly passionate about the right to roam and the right to wild camping.
